A Celebration Dinner
Between 1921 and 1923, the British production company Stoll Pictures produced an astounding 45 shorts and two full length films featuring Sherlock Holmes. The detective was portrayed by Eille Norwood, an actor strongly admired by Conan Doyle himself. After a century on the shelves, the British Film Institute's National Archive has launched a major project to resurrect and restore these epic silent films. It is a work in progress, and three of the restored films will be screened for the very first time in the United States at The American Film Institute's Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. The AFI has graciously designated The Red Circle as co-presenter of this extraordinary "Silent Sherlock" event, and our own Peter Blau has been invited to introduce the films. Ben Model, one of the nation's leading silent film accompanists, will provide the live musical score. AFI Silver is a gorgeous art deco showplace, built in 1938 and designed by the renowned theatre architect John Eberson. It is a classic venue for screening classic films.
The Films
A Scandal in Bohemia The King of Bohemia's engagement to a Scandanavian princess is in jeopardy over a picture of himself and opera singer Irene Adler. Sherlock Holmes is tasked with retrieving the photo. 1921.
- The Golden Pince-Nez Holmes is challenged to solve the mysterious murder of a professor's secretary, whose last words were "The Professor: it was she!" 1922.
- The Final Problem Holmes meets Moriarty in what Conan Doyle intended to be the sleuth's final adventure. 1923.

The Dinner
Following the screening The Red Circle will adjourn to J. Hollinger's Waterman's Chophouse, directly across the street from the theatre, for our 75th Anniversary dinner. It will be a time for food, drink, friendship, and conversation. There will be no papers, no speeches, no quizzes, no program. We will order from the regular menu; Hollinger's will happily provide separate checks and will discount them five per cent. In addition, everyone who makes a dinner reservation will receive free parking in Hollinger's garage for both the screening and dinner.
Quite simply, this is an event you won't want to miss.
Come if convenient. If inconvenient, come all the same!
Your time will not be misspent.
